FUKUOKA Bio Food Recycling Co., Ltd. (President: Hiroomi Nakagawa, Headquarters: Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, hereinafter "FUKUOKA Bio Food Recycling") has constructed a food recycling power plant in Fukuoka City, which has been operating in phases since January 2024. A power generation ceremony was held on May 21 to mark the start of full-scale power generation operations.
In 2021, Fukuoka City established the "Circular City Fukuoka Promotion Plan," actively working on waste reduction and resource recycling, with food waste management being a key challenge. To address this issue, J&T Recycling Corporation (President: Hiroyuki Haseba, Headquarters: Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture), a group company of JFE Engineering Corporation (President: Kazumi Fukuda, Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), established FUKUOKA Bio Food Recycling, launching the group's first food waste recycling business in the Kyushu region.
FUKUOKA Bio Food Recycling processes food waste (maximum 100t/day) through microbial fermentation, using the generated methane gas as fuel for power generation. The power output is 1,560kW, with an estimated annual power generation of approximately 12,000MWh (equivalent to the annual power consumption of about 2,700 households). The generated electricity will utilize the FIT (Feed-in Tariff) system and aim for local energy production and consumption through Urban Energy Corporation (President: Atsushi Kobayashi, Headquarters: Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture), JFE Engineering's power retail subsidiary. Additionally, the company is considering utilizing fermentation residue generated during the treatment process as fertilizer.
The JFE Engineering Group will continue to collaborate with local communities to improve food recycling rates and promote local production and consumption of renewable energy, contributing to the realization of a recycling-based society.
