Tohoku Bio Food Recycle Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, President: Satoru Udagawa, hereinafter "Tohoku Bio Food Recycle") has been operating a food recycling power plant in Sendai City in phases since February 2022, and today held a power generation ceremony marking the start of full-scale power generation operations.
Food waste in Japan amounts to 15.35 million tons annually, with most being incinerated. This project is the first joint venture in the Tohoku region between J&T Recycling, which has been conducting plastic recycling operations in Sendai City; JR East Group, which operates railway services, station buildings, in-station facilities, and hotels; and Tokyo Gas, which possesses biomass power generation expertise and provides stable gas and electricity supply and energy services.
Tohoku Bio Food Recycle processes 40 tons of food waste daily from businesses in and around Sendai Station, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, and neighboring prefectures, using microbial fermentation to generate methane gas for power generation. The food recycling plant has a power output of 780kW and an estimated annual power generation of approximately 6,500MWh (equivalent to annual power consumption of about 1,500 households). The annual CO2 reduction effect is approximately 3,000t-CO2.
The companies will promote the formation of a regional recycling-based society aimed at creating renewable energy from food waste and realizing a decarbonized society with local energy production and consumption. While operating with consideration for the surrounding environment, they will also aim to utilize fermentation residue as fertilizer for nearby farmland, contributing to both sustainable regional economic/social development and environmental conservation.
